With such a powerful adversary to contend with, does Lenovo even stand a chance to topple the number one?

A first look at the Lenovo office in Bengaluru shows a refreshingLenovo change from the serious image of IBM. The colour white (complete anti-thesis to the IBM obsession for black computers) dominates in the entire setting, and posters of the celebrity siblings & brand endorsers Saif & Soha Ali Khan adorn the walls. Ask Neeraj Sharma the key to Lenovo’s strategic objectives, and his answer is innovation. He feels Lenovo is one of the typical instances of Thomas Friedman’s ‘fl at world’, as the company is successfully leveraging engineering talent across the world. Three research labs in the US, Japan & China form the heart and soul of Lenovo’s R&D. The American lab works on Think vantage technologies, the Japanese lab for notebook innovations, while the Chinese lab is focused on desktop engineering. This is termed as the ‘innovation triangle’ of Lenovo. And an innovation centre in Mumbai has also come up recently to add to this list.

Will Siemens be back in calm waters?

Siemens created a history of sorts when it announced that an outsider, Siemens CEO, Klaus KleinfeldPeter Loscher, would be replacing outgoing CEO Klaus Kleinfeld. For more than a century, Siemens never had an outsider as a chief executive. An Austrian, Peter Loscher, has been a top executive in Merck and at one point had also worked for General Electric. The new 49- year-old MBA has spent most of his career in international assignments, and thus brings with him the expertise required for tapping emerging markets out of Europe. However, this is his first assignment as a CEO and he is all set to inherit the legacy of legendary Kleinfeld, which might turn out to be a difficult task for Loscher.

A Bombshell Called Branding

A couple of months back I happened to be in Germany on a business visit, and as I sipped on a latte at a Starbucks outlet swarming with a veritable sea of populace one morning, it was an overwhelming thought that popped in my mind. What in the world would make people willing enough to spend the equivalent of nearly three dollars worth on a cup of coffee, when the same could easily be enjoyed with a way much lesser dent in the wallet at other reasonable coffee joints? Evidently, that all too familiar denominator of purchase, the majority of the consumer breed call ‘price’ was on the backseat here.

The answer is loud and clear: Superbly valuable branding! It’s the Starbucks brand experience that 20 million customers a week in the world revel in, that makes them revisit the outlet. And guess what, even with more than six thousand outlets in over thirty countries and growing by a thousand outlets annually, the company owns a minuscule 7% share of the coffee consumers within the United States and less than 1% beyond America. What’s more, it’s marketing spend is not even 1% of its earnings!

Going to the movies?

Interestingly, these are the various factors that have turned the traditional hall into a live brand with a host of differentiating factors. Multiplexes like Cinemax & Fun Republic even have loyalty cards that give you points for sharing your movie experience with them. It is, therefore, not surprising to see the sort of investments that the big guns are looking at.

Reliance’s Adlabs has bought licensesfor the Kanpur-based Rave Cinemas. This gets them instant access to 23 screens over Delhi/NCR, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Punjab. So from their current 62 screens, Adlabs has made the prudent choice of entering even Tier II cities and started establishing visible brands. “Consolidation in exhibition space & integration with production houses will lead to faster development of movie business & significant value creation,” states Ravi Sardana, Senior VP, ICICI Securities Ltd.

People in Electrolux need to understand what’s going on

His impeccable foresight comes into play when he discloses the leadership model that follows in the company. He shares, “The company is very much based on entrepreneurship. People in Electrolux need to understand what’s going on. Electrolux is not a commando company... it’s not like an army where we tele-fax orders. We want our employees to take initiatives and not wait for orders. We firmly believe in giving freedom under responsibility to our employees.”

On inquiring about how important is the Indian market, Hans affirms, “The Indian market is very important and since it is developing very fast a lot of companies are getting attracted and are investing here.” He agrees that Electrolux is “not there yet” in the country. That’s one reason why Electrolux has entered into a partnership with Videocon, where the latter owns the brand in India. Electrolux provides back end expertise and Videocon is in charge of execution.
