Delicious divorce!

How can divorces be delicious? For starters, Cadbury Schweppes plans to bring in Cadbury plc as its new identity once its separation is complete. Strategically, the company will take up a cost reduction initiative to ‘focus on fewer, bigger and more value-creating initiatives’ and ‘significantly reduce complexity across all aspects of the business’. Cadbury now plans to close 15% of its manufacturing sites globally while reducing 15% of its labour force. This is to achieve mid teen percentage margins by 2011, from the 10.1% in 2006.

Over the next four years, the company aims to abridge its organisational structure for better execution of a focused commercial strategy. It was in March 2007, that Cadbury announced its plans to split Americas Beverages and confectionery, and of late confirmed that a ‘sale is the more likely expected as a outcome’. While showcasing tremendous confidence, the company believes that both the businesses have enough potential to operate in independent ways. On this cost reduction programme spanning 2007-2011, the estimated investment has been decided at $895 million, of which $99.4 million will be non-cash. Furthermore, the company has also restructured its confectionery business, with Britain, Ireland, the Middle East and Africa (BIMA) forming one part, while Americas, Asia Pacific and Europe (rest) representing the other.

The growing fear of video games...

The video game industry has been a high growth sector for the last decade with global sales in 2007 projected to cross $37 billion. Already bigger than the movie industry, it is slated to overtake the music industry too this year. As it grows, however, the industry is drawing flak for its unabashed use of gratuitous sex and violence to hook young minds. Games like Half-Life, GTA 3, and Quake 4 have been criticised for using this strategy. But a new breed of games has changed the rules of the game (no pun intended!). MMORPG or Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games feature a persistent online fantasy land, which gamers explore by creating a fictional character. Due to their online nature, these games are never-ending, meaning the developers keep adding content to keep gamers (read addicts) hooked.

Dancing With The Stars

Talk of conglomerates and the increasing interest of Anil Ambani in the Indian media and entertainment industry would be foolish to overlook. While the entrepreneur has upped his stake in the TV Today group, Adlabs (in which he has a 51% stake) is on its way to becoming an entertainment giant. From being a company which was into film post-production, the portfolio of the company has now expanded to film production, distribution, television content (through Siddharth Basu’s Synergy Communications), multiplexes and radio. For instance, a film produced by Adlbas is also distributed by it, is screened in its multiplexes (avoiding the hassles of finding distributors in areas where it’s present). Moreover, its radio brand – Big FM (one with the largest number of stations in the country) gets the exclusive music rights and its TV shows also promote the film in their own way. Now, that’s synergy, something that automatically comes with being a conglomerate!

Lost Egyptian queen discovered

The latest discovery of the long-lost queen’s mummy becomes monumental, because this time the axe and shovel (the Lost Egyptian queen discoveredtraditional tools of archeologists) have been fully aided by technology. Extensive use of DNA testing techniques, global positioning system (GPS), CT Scan and virtual imaging have all helped this recent discovery of the long-lost queen.

The story of Hatshepsut- a symbol of grit and determination, is as relevant today as it was during the ancient times. She had to sport a beard to sit on the throne, speaks volumes about the struggle which women have to wage to be accepted in a male dominated society. Even today some women are required to undergo ‘sex change’ to claim their right over parental property.
