Let’s head to a ‘Spice’y Hot Spot

After selling off his telecom business to Idea and speculations rife on the sale of his mobile business to Sony Ericsson, B. K. Modi is still betting big on mobile retail. surbhi chawla analyses what makes this business worth keeping for the Modi camp?

It couldn’t have been easy for Bhupendra Kumar Modi, the man who brought mobile phones to our country, to exit the telecom sphere, and that too at a time when the sector is growing exponentially. Let’s head to a ‘Spice’y Hot SpotBut even after selling Spice Communications to Idea Cellular, he stands tall and states unabashedly that, “Our Spice brand and the mobile retail chain – Hot Spot would remain with us.” In fact, B. K. Modi is so bullish about the mobile retail venture that big plans are being charted out and an IPO by the end of this year is also on the cards.

With India becoming the second largest telecom market of the world with about 212 million GSM connections (for June 2008 by COAI), and still growing steadily at 18% per annum, there seems to be plenty of scope for the handset market too. The market is pegged at Rs.750-Rs.1000 billion and is growing at a whopping CAGR of 60%. Little wonder that players like The Mobile Store (promoted by Essar & Virgin) Motostore (promoted by Motorola), mbazaar (promoted by Future Group), RPG Cellcom and Subhiksha Mobile have already joined the mobile retail bandwagon....Continue

Ma, we’re re‘pink’ing our strategy!

US slowdown is affecting employment across the globe, but the financial services sector leads the rest

Steven Tyler never uttered these words! But his group’s song was the rage of the 90s – ‘Pink is my favourite colour’, by the raucous Aerosmith! And you’ve been of late noticing how your boss has started crooning the song whenever you pass him by. Relax, it’s just a coincidence. Research shows that when bosses want to throw you out, they don’t sing Aerosmith songs :-) More seriously, international experts have been strongly commenting since last quarter that recession would not necessarily affect the skilled employment market that fast, especially in developed countries. Closer home, Dr. Naresh Malhan, MD, Manpower India comments that the impact on new recruitments “would not be imminent... especially when most businesses are plagued by talent shortage.”

On taking a global perspective, B&E realised that irrespective of how many experts we could put on one side of the table, it was the pink slip strategy that coloured every aspect of our finding, on whichever sector we touched. And there’s no better example than the global financial sector, with the sub-prime mistress raking in every penny uttering its name....Continue

No blitzkrieg this

Barclays must tread carefully

Can the British bull dog dance the Russian ballet? Barclays Bank, Britain’s third largest bank sure seems to think so, as it enters into a strategic move for expansion in emerging markets by buying up Russia’s Expobank.

Sure enough, it fell flat for its last bidding contest for ABN Amro Holding NV last year (offered $99 billion but lost to Royal Bank of Scotland Group Plc.), but Barclays is not giving up for sure! It has oozed out a whopping $745 million for Expobank, about four times its book value of $186 million, surely a red signal to analysts. Frits Seegers, Chief Executive, Global Retail and Commercial Banking, Barclays, prophesises, “Expobank’s existing relationships and infrastructure create the ideal platform for us to be one of the leading retail and commercial banks in Russia.” Expobank has assets of $1.24 billions with 32 branches in western Russia, and one of the largest networks of ATMs in Moscow. Moreover, Russia’s economic growth at 8.1% last year is much more promising than UK, with a meagre 2.9% growth, not to mention the collapse of the market for credit-related securities....Continue

A, B, C, D...

Army, blood, curfew & death!

The sheer magnitude of this so-called struggle for survival is so very large that it is engulfing almost everything.

This on-going devastation in the cloak of survival, peace or security is actually destroying most innocent lives. More than 2 million children have died & 12 million have been physically disabled or injured during the last decade due to these on-going wars. From Israel, Palestine to Yugoslavia & Sierra Leone, all these countries have not only used youngsters for wars, many more have become unwanted victims of crossfire. In Palestine alone, about 119 children have been killed directly & more than 700 due to the uprising. These ruinous wars not only leave children injured, orphaned & homeless, but also vulnerable to illness transmitted through unclean & poisonous environment, exacerbated food & water quality. This is complimented with psycho-social turmoil. War in essence gets over but the remnants linger in the premature minds of the hapless children. Almost any rational, would agree that these most innocent lives should be spared from these acts of violence. But such loft y proposals remain confined in the commission reports & seminars only while execution remains impractical. The reality however is far different.

We should do what?!? Hug China?

The aftermath of the Pokharan tests in 1998, when George Fernandes claimed that it wasn’t Pakistan but the threat from China that necessitated the nuclear test, created a major furor among the peaceniks and pseudo-intellectuals of this country. But the fact that most of the major powers of the world, including Russia, France and USA, let India off and eventually gave a whisper of a legitimacy through the nuclear deal (currently under negotiations) vindicates that what Fernandes claimed was not a slip of tongue. Even if we keep aside the humiliation that was showered on us by China in 1962 as a thing of the past, for the past two decades China has been consistently arming Pakistan with the most lethal nuclear and missile technology for obvious reasons.

Delicious divorce!

How can divorces be delicious? For starters, Cadbury Schweppes plans to bring in Cadbury plc as its new identity once its separation is complete. Strategically, the company will take up a cost reduction initiative to ‘focus on fewer, bigger and more value-creating initiatives’ and ‘significantly reduce complexity across all aspects of the business’. Cadbury now plans to close 15% of its manufacturing sites globally while reducing 15% of its labour force. This is to achieve mid teen percentage margins by 2011, from the 10.1% in 2006.

Over the next four years, the company aims to abridge its organisational structure for better execution of a focused commercial strategy. It was in March 2007, that Cadbury announced its plans to split Americas Beverages and confectionery, and of late confirmed that a ‘sale is the more likely expected as a outcome’. While showcasing tremendous confidence, the company believes that both the businesses have enough potential to operate in independent ways. On this cost reduction programme spanning 2007-2011, the estimated investment has been decided at $895 million, of which $99.4 million will be non-cash. Furthermore, the company has also restructured its confectionery business, with Britain, Ireland, the Middle East and Africa (BIMA) forming one part, while Americas, Asia Pacific and Europe (rest) representing the other.

The growing fear of video games...

The video game industry has been a high growth sector for the last decade with global sales in 2007 projected to cross $37 billion. Already bigger than the movie industry, it is slated to overtake the music industry too this year. As it grows, however, the industry is drawing flak for its unabashed use of gratuitous sex and violence to hook young minds. Games like Half-Life, GTA 3, and Quake 4 have been criticised for using this strategy. But a new breed of games has changed the rules of the game (no pun intended!). MMORPG or Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games feature a persistent online fantasy land, which gamers explore by creating a fictional character. Due to their online nature, these games are never-ending, meaning the developers keep adding content to keep gamers (read addicts) hooked.

Brand: Spark

Headline: Full Of Life!

Baseline : Na
Agency : Leo-Burnett
4ps Take : Yet another small car has hit Indian roads – this time, it’s Chevrolet’s baby, Spark. So how does the brand ‘distinguish’ itself? Simple! It’s targetting the youth, so the communication is bubbly, peppy and very young! The car is being positioned as one that’s full of energy and zing; geared to take you anywhere and everywhere. The attractive visual–that gives us a good view of the car (from outside, as well as the interiors!) – is backed up by some very informative stuff on all the new features that the Spark comes loaded with, offering customers great reward to the prospect. The power idea? Other than youthfulness, the brand is easy on the pocket and comes with a competitive price tag. So, will GM’s small car gamble pay off?

Threaten or use peaceful means... Choice is yours!

Atruism in human as well as world affairs is that if you threaten people, they will defend themselves. If you reach out in good faith, people are likely to reach back.

A case in point is the long tortuous relations between the US and North Korea. One of many illustrations was when, in 2002, President Bush named North Korea a charter member of the “axis of evil.” North Korea was developing plutonium bombs and represented an imminent threat, according to the US intelligence. The charges in fact instigated the very threats that Washington had warned against. North Korea, unlike Iraq, could already defend itself – with massed artillery aimed at Seoul, South Korea and at US troops. The stakes rose as North Korea began amassing its nuclear arsenal.
